AN INTERNATIONAL CONNECTION TO CIU.

When WBCCI members Reto and Anita Bon from St. Gallen, Switzerland, attended a Region 5 luncheon at the Madison International Rally they met several CIU members. Since buying their Airstream they have been to several international rallies and while there try to attend regional luncheons so they can meet people from all over the United States.

While traveling in Austria this summer we spent an afternoon and evening with Bons and got a tour of their 25’ Airstream International.

Their Airstream had been exported from the US and converted to 220 volts before they purchased it. Reto said getting the Airstream to meet European standards was quite a challenge. Since allowable tongue weight in Europe is about 150 lbs. they had to resort to putting lead bars in the rear bumper when it was inspected. Ah, those clever Swiss! The interior is very “European modern” with bright aluminum walls even a small desk.

Thanks to the Bons we learned that St. Gallen at one time commanded 50% of the world’s embroidered textile industry and still has extraordinary art deco buildings and a magnificent library at the university.

After our tour we enjoyed a regional dinner in Appenzell with Reto and Anita. The Krummelsuppe (caraway soup), Gitzi (goat), and of course the local cheese were a completely new dining experience for both of us.

If you are ever in their neighborhood Reto and Anita would love to greet you and show you their beautiful city and their gorgeous Airstream.

The Bons will join WBCCI again in Gillete, so look for them there!
